Dr. Hilal bin Ali Al-Sabti, Oman Minister of Health, presided over the delegation participating in the 1st Gathering of the Global Group of Heads of State & Government for the Prevention & Control of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) in the United States of America (USA), New York.
The meeting aimed to raise the priority accorded to the prevention and control of NCDs within the national and international Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). NCDs have become the leading cause of death in most countries, resulting in 150 million premature deaths among people aged between 30 and 70 years.
The meeting deliberated how to leverage the collective to inspire and support global action on NCDs and the SDGs by highlighting actions taken by the countries to reduce these diseases. Furthermore, the meeting's agenda focused on the importance of concerted efforts of Governments to accelerate the SDGs.
